SUMMARY:GREAT LOVES - Coco Hoek – Bonjour Tristesse (Françoise Sagan)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday September 22\, Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Books series will feature Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan as the sixth event in the series. \nBonjour Tristesse took the world by storm as a succès de scandale in 1954 and bestowed instant fame on its author\, 19-year-old Françoise Sagan. But not quite literary fame – from the beginning\, it was the person of Sagan rather than her book that attracted attention. A girl\, and such a young girl\, writing about sexual relationships! And then\, as the money started pouring in\, a girl leading a life full of expensive cars and nightclubs! \nCoco Hoek\, who studied French in Leiden\, will explain to us the context in which this famous book was written in which so many characters are in love (but hardly ever mutually so) and in which we find no less than two love triangles\, one cleverly  manipulated and one rather unusual. \nBut she will also explore the legends surrounding Sagan and the often despised “little Saganesque world” of the upper classes\, and the great themes in her later work. Are they already present in this first novel? \nCome and get (re-)acquainted with Cécile and Raymond\, and get to know a bit more about Françoise Sagan\, in her own words. What did she have to say about the book\, the legend\, and her writing? \nThe afternoon will end with a theatrical reading performed by the Mayflower Theatre Company (Freek Bouricius and Roland de Ligny) \nCoco Hoek is an independent tutor and tutor in French. She obtained her MA in French studies at Leiden University.

SUMMARY:GREAT LOVE – Louis Smit – Anna Karenina (Lev Tolstoj)
DESCRIPTION:Coming up – Great Loves: Anna and Alexei – a forbidden love in Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina \n  \nOn Sunday August 25\, Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Books series will feature ‘Anna Karenina’ by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy as the fifth event in the series. After ‘War and Peace’\, this was the second great novel by this Russian writer. Published between 1865 and 1869\, it is an undisputed masterpiece of world literature. \nLouis Smit\, who studied Slavic language and literature in Leiden and Prague and is a communication consultant by profession\, will talk about the place of Tolstoy (1828-1910) in Russian literature of the nineteenth century. In particular\, he will discuss the magisterial structure\, compelling content and appealing style of ‘Anna Karenina’. \nThe novel is about a tempestuous love affair in a religious and social context that was deeply troubled by it. What is interesting is the communication between all involved and the way the surroundings deal with the relationship of the married Anna and the young wealthy philanderer Alexei Vronsky. The lecture will also focus on the film adaptations of the book and the person of Tolstoy. The event will be illustrated by a reading from the novel. Both lecture and reading will be in Dutch. \nSo join us on Sunday August 25 at 16.00 to learn all about this Russian classic! \n  \nLouis Smit is a communications consultant. He took his MA degree in Slavic studies in both Leiden and Prague.

SUMMARY:GREAT LOVES – Wim Tigges – Wuthering Heights (Emily Brontë)
DESCRIPTION:Great Loves #4: Cathy and Heathcliff in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights \nOn June 30th\, Wim Tigges will tells us about the great love between Cathy and Heathcliff in the fourth GREAT LOVES event. \nWuthering Heights (1847)\, Emily Brontë’s only novel\, has become a ‘classic’ and a steady seller. Almost everyone knows the names of ‘Cathy’ and ‘Heathcliff’\, if only through Kate Bush\, or through the numerous film adaptations of this ‘romantic’ novel. The author lived out contrasts between wild (‘real’) nature and nature experience on the one hand and domestic civilisation on the other\, between town and countryside\, and in that countryside between the traditional\, ‘primitive’ inhabitants of the 300-year-old Wuthering Heights estate and the ‘modern’ inhabitants of Thrushcross Grange. These contradictions also manifest themselves in the way feelings\, and erotic feelings in particular\, are handled. In Wuthering Heights\, Catherine Earnshaw\, as a 16-year-old girl\, must choose between her passionate love for the wild ‘migrant’ Heathcliff and a materially sensible marriage to the well-behaved Edgar Linton. Later\, her daughter faces a similar choice… \nDon’t miss this classic and join us on Sunday\, June 30th at 16.00! \nWim Tigges is anglicist and literary scholar\, as well as a guest-lecturer at Leiden University and HOVO.

SUMMARY:GREAT LOVES - Ruud Hisgen – Senilità – (As a man grows older) (Italo Svevo)
DESCRIPTION:As the third event in our series Great Loves\, we travel to the Italy of Italo Svevo. \nWe would probably never have heard of Italo Svevo (pseudonym of Ettore Schmitz (1861-1928)\, born in Trieste\, had he not been taught English by the Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941) at the beginning of the 20th century. The lessons in Trieste led to an inspiring friendship to which we owe not only Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939) but also Svevo’s later witty novel Confessions of Zeno (1923). James Joyce was so impressed by Svevo’s Senelitá\, which had appeared in 1898 but had gone virtually unnoticed\, that he personally saw to it that it received literary attention in French translation in the roaring twenties. In 1932\, the novel appeared in English with the title Joyce had coined for it: As a Man Grows Older. Both titles suggest that the story is about the kind of love a middle-aged man has for a young woman\, but the protagonist Emilio Brentani is only 35. Like Svevo\, Emilio is a failed author. He has an unsatisfied desire for love and ‘a certain bitterness at the thought of missing it’ . He enters into a dangerous relationship with the slim and sly blonde Angiolina. In this short novel\, Svevo explores all the feelings that arise in such an adventure and\, above all\, gets to know himself better. In this reading\, we follow Emilio’s amorous entanglements and try to find out why Joyce was so impressed by Senelità. \nRuud Hisgen\, anglicist and literary scholar\, is also the owner of the Direct Dutch Institute\, teaching Dutch as a second language.

SUMMARY:GREAT LOVES - Leo van Zanen – Polifemo y Galatea (Luis de Góngora)
DESCRIPTION:Great Loves series\n\n\n\nFollowing our successful ‘Great Books’ series in 2023\, we are now launching a new international series: ‘Great loves’. This series will cover different types of love: the love between man and woman\, the love between father and daughter and pink love is not forgotten either. And as diverse as these lectures are in love\, we also travel both in time (from classical antiquity to modern times) and place (after classical antiquity and Spain in the March event\, to The England of Shakespeare and that of Emily Brontë\, Italo Svevo’s Italy\, The Russia of Leonid Tolstoj\, Francoise Sagan’s France and Theodore Fontane’s Germany. The series will conclude at our Oscar Wilde Festival in November! \n\n\n\n \n#1 Polifemo y Galatea\n\n\n\nLeo van Zanen opens this series with a timeless story from classical antiquity\, first made popular by ancient Roman poet Ovid: the nymph and the giant; he comes from the land\, she from the sea. \n\n\n\nTheir story proved immortal: it offered centuries of material to poets\, composers\, painters and sculptors from the Roman Golden Age to modern times. Each time it became more beautiful\, more poignant. \n\n\n\nVan Zanen will compare the different versions of this timeless story of an impossible love. Among others\, he will recite from the Metamorphoses by Roman poet Ovid\, whom you be familiar with from the widely known Art of Love (Ars Amatoria) and from the poem Polifemo y Galatea by Spanish writer Luis de Góngora (1561-1621). \n\n\n\nDon’t miss our first ‘Great Love’ and join us and be inspired by a great love story! \n\n\n\nMarch 24th\, 16h00\, Breestraat 70 Leiden \n  \nLeo van Zanen is poet and performer as well as translator of poetry from many languages into Dutch. He is guest-lecturer on varied literary subjects (mainly poetry) at many libraries and bookshops all over the region.

SUMMARY:Jane Austens nalatenschap en die van de beide Cassandra's
DESCRIPTION:Coming up: Jane Austen’s legacy \nOn Sunday\, February 18\, linguist and anglicist Prof. Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade will treat us to a lecture on  much beloved novelist Jane Austen. Not so much on Austen’s novels\, as on her language and the legacy she left us. \nBecaues Jane Austen’s legacy consists of more than just her novels: she also left a will. When her family found it after her death\, it immediately gave rise to yet another will\, that of her mother. In both cases\, Jane’s sister Cassandra was the main heir. Cassandra’s own will\, drafted shortly before her death\, paints a picture of how she had dealt with limited income during her lifetime (although she had disposed of the copyright to Jane’s novels early on). Together\, the wills paint a picture of a group of unmarried and therefore financially vulnerable women who managed to take good care of each other through bequests in their wills. \nTieken is a professor emeritus of English Sociohistorical Linguistics at Leiden University’s Centre for Linguistics. She has researched widely in the area of English socio-historical linguistics having looked at such diverse fields as English negations\, historical social network analysis\, the standardisation process and the language of 18th-century letters. \nWhat do the wills of Jane Austen\, her mother and her sister Cassandra tell us about the lives of 19th c women? And how does it influence our reading of Austen’s novels today? \nA must for all of us who love Jane Austen’s work! Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:Mad\, bad and dangerous to know
DESCRIPTION:‘Mad\, bad and dangerous to know’ – Byron’s poetry after 200 years \nSunday January 28\, 2024: 16.00 \nIn April 1816\, the notorious George\, sixth Lord Byron\, was leaving England for the final time. Hounded by increasingly damaging accusations – of adultery\, sodomy (then a capital offence)\, and incest with his half-sister – he was escaping to the continent. Second perhaps only to the Italian libertine Giacomo Casanova\, he remains one of the most notorious seducers of the Georgian era. \n2024 marks the bicentenary of Byron’s death\, and many commemorations of his death and celebrations of his poetry take place across the globe; reason enough for Mayflower Bookshop to dedicate our Poetry Week Event to this great English poet! On Sunday January 28\, Wim Tigges\, literary scholar and anglicist\, will take us on a journey through Byron’s scandalous life and great poetry\, and show us why Byron’s poetry still has much to offer us and fascinates us even after 200 years!

SUMMARY:GREAT BOOKS – Ruud Hisgen – El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (Cervantes)
DESCRIPTION:Enchanted by books: Don Quixote and Miguel de Cervantes \nOn Sunday November 26\, Ruud Hisgen\, anglicist\, literary scholar and writer\, will conclude our Great Books series with a lecture on the Spanish classic ‘El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha’ (The ingenious nobleman Don Quixote of La Mancha). This famous novel by Miguel de Cervantes Saavreda (1547-1616) first published in 1605\, is regarded as the first ‘modern’ psychological novel and is available all over the world in many languages and editions. The voluminous work is on display in many a bookcase. Yet this funny and moving novel is rarely read and that is a pity. Cervantes was not only a contemporary of William Shakespeare\, who also died in 1616\, but also a kindred spirit. Both writers have had a not-to-be-overestimated influence on many generations of authors from Laurence Sterne to Salman Rushdie. Hisgen will discuss the special historical\, biographical and literary background and demonstrate that this novel should not be left unread. So don’t miss this closing event of our Great Books series! \nRuud Hisgen\, anglicist and literary scholar\, is also the owner of the Direct Dutch Institute\, teachting Dutch as a second language.

SUMMARY:GREAT BOOKS - Coco Hoek – Dangerous Liaisons (Choderlos de Laclos)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday September 24th\, Coco Hoek will give the fourth lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Books series\, featuring the famous novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses (In Dutch: Gevaarlijk spel met de liefde). Written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos\, this epistolary novel was originally published in four volumes from 1782 and celebrated for its exploration of seduction\, revenge and malice. The book was viewed as scandalous at the time of its publication. \nCoco Hoek\, who studied French in Leiden\, will place this masterpiece in the context of its time\, and explain to us why this novel was a ‘succès de scandale’ from the start\, but will also show us its narrative power\, its stylistic fire and its beauty. \nWhat makes the book chafe to this day? Why does it still sparkle and delight a 21st century audience? What do you really need to know about the literary context to fully enjoy the book\, and what\, in your enthusiasm for the sparkling protagonists’ content\, should you really not lose sight of anyway? \nHoek’s enticing lecture on this jewel will be illustrated by a theatrical reading\, performed by Freek Bouricius and Roland de Ligny (Mayflower Theatre Company). \nGet ready for a magnificent and scandalous afternoon and don’t miss this opportunity to get acquainted with this masterpiece or renew your acquaintance! \n\nCoco Hoek is an independent tutor and tutor in French. She obtained her MA in French studies at Leiden University

This collection of 36 of Shakespeare’s works brought together by two of his friends\, John Heminges and Henry Condell under the full title of: \nMr. VVilliam Shakespeares comedies\, histories\, & tragedies. Published according to the true originall copies. \nAs a tribute to their friend\, Heminges and Condell wanted to put forward the best possible version of Shakespeare’s plays\, so they used original prompt books\, quartos\, and original notes to collate the final collection. \nMayflower Bookshop celebrates this milestone with a Shakespeare Festival on Sunday April 23rd\, the day on which the Bard died and also the date that might very well have been his birth date as well! \nThe festival will take up all afternoon\, starting at noon exactly and will cover multiple aspects of his work including the sonnets\, originally published in 1609 and a memorial. \nWe will kick-off the festival with a lecture by Dr. Wim Tigges\, frequent speaker at Mayflower Bookshop\, who will talk on genderfluidity in Shakespeare. \nThis lecture will be followed by the performance of two scenes from the comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor\, played by The Mayflower Theatre Company (Suze Hageman and Esther Straathof) under direction of house-director Sigrid de Zwart. \nAt 14.00\, Leo van Zanen gives a talk on Shakespeare’s Sugar’d Sonnets and musician Willem Vermaase will illustrate this lecture by playing a few Shakespearean songs. Leo\, a frequent guest-lecturer as well\, will subsequently lead a walk to ‘Sonnet 30’ where\, as a tribute to The Bard\, this poem will be recited in English and Dutch and a short memorial ceremony will take place. \nAt 16.00\, Tony Foster\, lecturer at Leiden University (English culture and literature) will delight you with atalk on law practice as portrayed in The Merchant of Venice after which the Mayflower Theatre Company will conclude the afternoon with a performance of a few scenes from the tragey Macbeth\, played by Freek Bouricius and Simme van de Lustgraaf\, under direction of guest-director Herman Duchenne. \nThe complete programme can be found here. \nIn the meantime\, to whet your appetite\, please visit the exhibition ‘Gesuikerde sonnetten’ (Sugar’d sonnets) in the B+C library\, organized by Leo van Zanen. SUMMARY:Bookweek 2023: Maxim Osipov in Mayflower Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Bookweek 2023 (March 11 – 19) Mayflower Bookshop is proud to welcome Maxim Osipov on Sunday March 12 for an interview on his recently published book Kilometer 101\, followed by a signing session. \nIn March 2022\, after criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, Russian author and cardiologist Maxim Osipov fled Russia. First to Armenia (where Russians can go without a visa)\, followed by a flight to Berlin where he spent three months. Since last September he is guest lecturer at Leiden University\, teaching a course on Russian short stories. Osipov won several literary prizes for his work in Russia\, and his short stories\, novellas\, essays and plays have been translated into over a dozen languages including English and Dutch. \nKilometer 101\, his new new collection of short stories and sketches is still gaining daily urgency. Deception\, political pressure\, discrimination\, poverty and booze\, ubiquitous corruption\, the increasing need to emigrate and the fear of leaving one’s home\, as well as generational conflicts\, are woven into this work in the same way that they are woven into the lives of Osipov’s fellow Russians. The 101st kilometre (Russian: 101-й километр\, sto pervyy kilometr) is a colloquial phrase for restrictions on freedom of movement in the Soviet Union. \nMayflower Bookshop will interview Osipov on his reasons for his flight from Russia\, his visiting lectureship and naturally on his previous work and on Kilometer 101. \nDon’t want to miss this opportunity? Please book your reservation if you want to be seated! Send an email to freek@mayflowerbookshop.nl by Wednesday March 8th at the latest. \nSunday March 12\, 2023\, 16.00. SUMMARY:Poetry Week Event: Burns’ Night
DESCRIPTION:Sunday January 29th\, 16h00 – Breestraat 70 \nTraditionally\, Dutch Poetry Week is celebrated in Mayflower Bookshop with a poetry event on the last Sunday of January. This year\, Mayflower Bookshop marks the theme of Poetry Week 2023 (friendship) by marking the occasion of Burns’ Night on Sunday January 29th. \nHeld throughout the world on January 25th (or on a date close to it) Burns’ Night is an event that celebrates the work and life of Robert Burns (born on January 25th 1795)\, Scotland’s national poet. The first Burns’ Night was initiated in July 1801 when nine of Burns’ close friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of their friend’s death. Taking place at Burns Cottage in Alloway\, the night included a tasty meal (haggis\, of course!)\, performances of Burns’ work and a speech in honour of the great Bard (now known as the Immortal Memory). The night was such a resounding success they decided to hold it again (this time in honour of Rabbie’s birthday)\, beginning a tradition that is still celebrated by Scots all over the world. \nDuring the Mayflower Burns’ Night\, Leo van Zanen will focus on translations of Burns’ work\, while Adrian Young will concentrate on Burn’s life and the importance of his work. Folkband ‘Fiddle & Drum will play a nummer of Burns’ ballads and other Scots songs. Also the event will be featuring the reading of some of Burn’s poems. \nDon’t miss the Mayflower Burns’ Night! \n
