SUMMARY:[Schedule change] 'Hunted Down': Charles Dickens and Thomas Wainewright
DESCRIPTION:Wim Tigges on Crime & Dickens \nCharles Dickens was fascinated with crime\, and in particular with punishment. These are at least subsidiary themes in all of his novels and in many short stories\, where petty and great criminals occur in plenty\, from deceitful Mr. Jingle in The Pickwick Papers to the alleged murderer John Jasper in the uncompleted Mystery of Edwin Drood. Bleak House was one of the first novels in English to introduce a detective officer. In this lecture\, however\, the focus will be on Dickens’s acquaintance with Thomas Wainewright (1794-1847)\, who was suspected of murder and convicted for insurance fraud. Dickens met him on a visit to Newgate prison\, where Wainwright was awaiting transportation to Tasmania\, and he became an inspiration for one of his lesser-known short stories\, ‘Hunted Down’.

SUMMARY:Mayflower Book Club reads River Sing Me Home
DESCRIPTION:Our June Book of the Month is Eleanor Shearer’s debut novel River Sing Me Home. In Barbados of 1834\, a slave called Rachel is told she is free. Reality proves to be different\, however\, and she flees her plantation to search for the five children taken from her and sold. Rachel traverses across the Caribbean to find out what has become of them and hear their stories. River Sing Me Home\, based on true events\, is a powerful story of courage and sacrifice that explores what it means to be a mother and to be free. \nOpen Book Club\, sessions in English – please sign up per session: bookclub@mayflowerbookshop.nl
