SUMMARY:[Schedule change] 'Hunted Down': Charles Dickens and Thomas Wainewright
DESCRIPTION:Wim Tigges on Crime & Dickens \nCharles Dickens was fascinated with crime\, and in particular with punishment. These are at least subsidiary themes in all of his novels and in many short stories\, where petty and great criminals occur in plenty\, from deceitful Mr. Jingle in The Pickwick Papers to the alleged murderer John Jasper in the uncompleted Mystery of Edwin Drood. Bleak House was one of the first novels in English to introduce a detective officer. In this lecture\, however\, the focus will be on Dickens’s acquaintance with Thomas Wainewright (1794-1847)\, who was suspected of murder and convicted for insurance fraud. Dickens met him on a visit to Newgate prison\, where Wainwright was awaiting transportation to Tasmania\, and he became an inspiration for one of his lesser-known short stories\, ‘Hunted Down’.

SUMMARY:Mayflower Book Club reads River Sing Me Home
DESCRIPTION:Our June Book of the Month is Eleanor Shearer’s debut novel River Sing Me Home. In Barbados of 1834\, a slave called Rachel is told she is free. Reality proves to be different\, however\, and she flees her plantation to search for the five children taken from her and sold. Rachel traverses across the Caribbean to find out what has become of them and hear their stories. River Sing Me Home\, based on true events\, is a powerful story of courage and sacrifice that explores what it means to be a mother and to be free. \nOpen Book Club\, sessions in English – please sign up per session: bookclub@mayflowerbookshop.nl

SUMMARY:Great Crime Lecture: Louis Smit over Crime and Punishment
DESCRIPTION:Next in our Great Crime series: Louis Smit on Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (lecture in Dutch) \nThe fifth lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Crime series will be given by Louis Smit on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. This lecture\, given in Dutch\, will explore crime in Russian literature. \nIn this novel\, published in 1866\, a desperate former student robs and kills an old rich pawnbroker\, intending to use her money to break free out of poverty and do great deeds. Unlike most crime novels\, this isn’t a mystery or whodunnit. The reader knows from the beginning who the murderer is. \nRather\, Crime and Punishment focusses on the police’s pursuit of the killer and the psychological aspects\, such as how the killer tries to justify his actions while dealing with guilt over what he has done. Furthermore\, love and the unfortunate circumstances Russia finds itself in also come to play. \nThe novel is not all about the crime. The killer also faces punishment. Like Dostoevsky himself\, he ends up in a penal camp to pay for his crime.

SUMMARY:Great Crime lecture: Commissaire Maigret en zijn collega's
DESCRIPTION:The sixth lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Crime series will be given by Coco Hoek. Her lecture\, in Dutch\, will examine that greatest of all French fictional detectives\, Commissaire Maigret. But not just Maigret! \nShe will give an introduction to the life of his creator\, Georges Simenon\, and take a close look at one of his most baffling cases\, The Yellow Dog. But while Maigret was the undisputed King of Crime-solving for more than half a century\, we cannot overlook the fact that took his well-earned retirement in the 1970’s. Does that mean that one now gets away with murder in France? \nNo! Maigret has many successors\, and one of them\, Commissaire Dupin\, lives and works in Bretagne\, in the very town of Concarneau where Maigret solved the case of The Yellow Dog. \nCoco Hoek will take you on a virtual trip to Concarneau\, where you will meet two commissaires and two authors. And we will look into two crimes. You’ll discover differences\, similarities\, and dark deeds. The Case of the Lying Midwife\, The Case of the Man in the Fog\, and The Case of the Stolen Plot – but is there a stolen plot?

SUMMARY:Banned Books Festival
DESCRIPTION:“Banned books\nAre the only books that truly live.” \nNâzim Hikmet’s passionate plea for the banned book (see our Poem of the Month) will leave no-one unmoved. It was spread around on Facebook during Banned Books Week\, an event that got attention all over the internet as well as in our Leiden public library which showed a thoughtfully curated selection of banned books. \nInterestingly\, the only book they could show that was actually banned by the Dutch Government was Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. All other books on the displays were banned in foreign countries or by religious groups. It might make us feel that the topic of Banned Books is hardly up close and personal. Yet increasingly books are banned or censured. Not just in far-away dictatorial regimes. Not just in the U.S.A.\, which eerily and increasingly resemble The Republic of Gilead as described in The Handmaid’s Tale (a novel that\, while freely sold in bookshops\, is under severe public library and school library restrictions in 11 states). \nBooks are censured in the United Kingdom as well. And even in our country there are teachers in a Reformatorische School who need to check whether it is allowed to read a play by Shakespeare with their students. \nBanned books are not a thing from the past\, from foreign countries where they do things differently. They are a harsh\, urgent reality in the here and now. \nLet’s all get together to hear about banned books and celebrate banned books at our \nMayflower Banned Books Festival \nNovember 8\, 2026\, Breestraat 70 \nProgramme (in Dutch): \n13.30: Leo van Zanen: NIET LEZEN!
