SUMMARY:GREAT LOVES  - Ruud Hisgen – Senilità – (As a man grows older) (Italo Svevo)
DESCRIPTION:As the third event in our series Great Loves\, we travel to the Italy of Italo Svevo. \nWe would probably never have heard of Italo Svevo (pseudonym of Ettore Schmitz (1861-1928)\, born in Trieste\, had he not been taught English by the Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941) at the beginning of the 20th century. The lessons in Trieste led to an inspiring friendship to which we owe not only Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake (1939) but also Svevo’s later witty novel Confessions of Zeno (1923). James Joyce was so impressed by Svevo’s Senelitá\, which had appeared in 1898 but had gone virtually unnoticed\, that he personally saw to it that it received literary attention in French translation in the roaring twenties. In 1932\, the novel appeared in English with the title Joyce had coined for it: As a Man Grows Older. Both titles suggest that the story is about the kind of love a middle-aged man has for a young woman\, but the protagonist Emilio Brentani is only 35. Like Svevo\, Emilio is a failed author. He has an unsatisfied desire for love and ‘a certain bitterness at the thought of missing it’ . He enters into a dangerous relationship with the slim and sly blonde Angiolina. In this short novel\, Svevo explores all the feelings that arise in such an adventure and\, above all\, gets to know himself better. In this reading\, we follow Emilio’s amorous entanglements and try to find out why Joyce was so impressed by Senelità. \nRuud Hisgen\, anglicist and literary scholar\, is also the owner of the Direct Dutch Institute\, teaching Dutch as a second language.

DESCRIPTION:Great Loves #4: Cathy and Heathcliff in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights \nOn June 30th\, Wim Tigges will tells us about the great love between Cathy and Heathcliff in the fourth GREAT LOVES event. \nWuthering Heights (1847)\, Emily Brontë’s only novel\, has become a ‘classic’ and a steady seller. Almost everyone knows the names of ‘Cathy’ and ‘Heathcliff’\, if only through Kate Bush\, or through the numerous film adaptations of this ‘romantic’ novel. The author lived out contrasts between wild (‘real’) nature and nature experience on the one hand and domestic civilisation on the other\, between town and countryside\, and in that countryside between the traditional\, ‘primitive’ inhabitants of the 300-year-old Wuthering Heights estate and the ‘modern’ inhabitants of Thrushcross Grange. These contradictions also manifest themselves in the way feelings\, and erotic feelings in particular\, are handled. In Wuthering Heights\, Catherine Earnshaw\, as a 16-year-old girl\, must choose between her passionate love for the wild ‘migrant’ Heathcliff and a materially sensible marriage to the well-behaved Edgar Linton. DESCRIPTION:Coming up – Great Loves: Anna and Alexei – a forbidden love in Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina \n  \nOn Sunday August 25\, Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Books series will feature ‘Anna Karenina’ by Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy as the fifth event in the series. After ‘War and Peace’\, this was the second great novel by this Russian writer. Published between 1865 and 1869\, it is an undisputed masterpiece of world literature. \nLouis Smit\, who studied Slavic language and literature in Leiden and Prague and is a communication consultant by profession\, will talk about the place of Tolstoy (1828-1910) in Russian literature of the nineteenth century. In particular\, he will discuss the magisterial structure\, compelling content and appealing style of ‘Anna Karenina’. \nThe novel is about a tempestuous love affair in a religious and social context that was deeply troubled by it. What is interesting is the communication between all involved and the way the surroundings deal with the relationship of the married Anna and the young wealthy philanderer Alexei Vronsky. The lecture will also focus on the film adaptations of the book and the person of Tolstoy. The event will be illustrated by a reading from the novel. Both lecture and reading will be in Dutch. \nSo join us on Sunday August 25 at 16.00 to learn all about this Russian classic! \n  \nLouis Smit is a communications consultant. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday September 22\, Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Books series will feature Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan as the sixth event in the series. \nBonjour Tristesse took the world by storm as a succès de scandale in 1954 and bestowed instant fame on its author\, 19-year-old Françoise Sagan. But not quite literary fame – from the beginning\, it was the person of Sagan rather than her book that attracted attention. A girl\, and such a young girl\, writing about sexual relationships! And then\, as the money started pouring in\, a girl leading a life full of expensive cars and nightclubs! \nCoco Hoek\, who studied French in Leiden\, will explain to us the context in which this famous book was written in which so many characters are in love (but hardly ever mutually so) and in which we find no less than two love triangles\, one cleverly  manipulated and one rather unusual. \nBut she will also explore the legends surrounding Sagan and the often despised “little Saganesque world” of the upper classes\, and the great themes in her later work. Are they already present in this first novel? \nCome and get (re-)acquainted with Cécile and Raymond\, and get to know a bit more about Françoise Sagan\, in her own words. What did she have to say about the book\, the legend\, and her writing? \nThe afternoon will end with a theatrical reading performed by the Mayflower Theatre Company (Freek Bouricius and Roland de Ligny) \nCoco Hoek is an independent tutor and tutor in French. She obtained her MA in French studies at Leiden University.

SUMMARY:GREAT LOVES – Hans van der Veen – Effi Briest (Theodore Fontane)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday October 27\, Mayflower Bookshop Great Loves series presents Theodor Fontane’s masterpiece Effi Briest as the 7th lecture in the series. Published in book form in 1895\, Effi Briest marks both a watershed and a climax in the poetic realism of literature. It can be thematically compared to other novels on 19th-century marriage from a female perspective\, such as Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary\, which are also adultery tragedies. \nThe novel is about the love between Effi Briest and major Crampas. Effi\, a 17-year old girl of noble descent\, is married off to the 38-year-old Baron Geert von Instetten. The marriage is not a success. Effi is playful and wants to be played with. Also\, Instetten is away for weeks. When Major Crampas arrives\, Effi cannot help relishing his attentions despite Crampas being a married womaniser\, and their love is consummated. Her husband looks down on Crampas\, whom he finds a lewd philanderer with cavalier views of law. Crampas views Innstetten as a patronising prig.\nYears later\, when Geert\, Effi and daughter Lütt-Anni has moved to Berlin\, Geert finds love letters written by Crampas by chance.\nA duel is inevitable. Crampas dies and the marriage is dissolved. Effi is allowed to to meet her daughter only once; a visit which ends dramatically. Effi goes back\nto her parents and dies there shortly afterwards. \nToday Effi Briest is widely discussed and taught at German schools. It has greatly influenced German writers\, including Thomas Mann in his creation of Buddenbrooks. Mann said that if one had to reduce one’s library to six novels\, Effi Briest would have to be one of them. \nHans van der Veen\, translator of poetry and retired teacher of German will tell us not only about the story and its author\, but also illuminate us about the context in which it was written. \nHans van der Veen is a germanist and retired German language teacher. He is also a gifted translator of poetry into German.

DESCRIPTION:On October 16th\, Oscar Wilde was born 170  years ago; reason for Mayflower Bookshop to organize a festival on November 10th about this fascinating 19th poet and playwright! \nOscar Fingal O’Fflahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s\, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. He is best remembered for his epigrams and plays\, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray\, and his criminal conviction for gross indecency for homosexual acts. \nThe Festival starts off with an interview with Oscar Wilde himself\, followed by lectures on his essays (Wim Tigges)\, his poetry (Leo van Zanen)\, Wilde’s downfall under British law at that time (Tony Foster) and his impact on the gay community and relationship with ‘Bosie’ (Looi van Kessel). To illustrate Wilde’s work\, a scene form ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ is performed by the Mayflower Theatre Company and the musical band Art For Art’s Sake provides surprising links with Oscar Wilde.

Part of the European Jazz Master programme\, he is staying in the Netherlands for this semester at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam. \nGraduated from the Conservatory of Buenos Aires\, with two albums as leader\, “Refugio” (2021) and “Afinidades” (2023)\, and many albums as a sideman\, Naishtat has been a very active member of the Argentine jazz scene before moving to Europe in 2023. \nHe is now part of a jazz master’s programme between the Conservatories of Paris\, Berlin\, Trondheim\, and Amsterdam. \nWith his main influences being guitarists like Peter Bernstein\, Jesse Van Ruller\, and Lage Lund\, he has developed a very personal approach to the instrument with sensitivity and virtuosity\, where we can also find his roots from Latin American music.Join us on January 25th for an unforgettable musical experience. This series includes much-loved international masterpieces such Winnie-the-Pooh\, Pinocchio\, Sans Famille and Emil und die Detektive\, in addition to the mother of children’s poetry\, the Dutch Annie M.G. Schmidt. \nEarly children’s literature consisted of spoken stories\, songs and poems\, which were used to teach\, instruct and entertain children. Only in the 18th century\, with the development of the concept of childhood\, did a separate genre of children’s literature begin to emerge\, with its own divisions\, expectations and canon. \nThe art of printing had yet to be invented. Young people were at most a target group to be taught. Children’s books were not yet written. Knight’s tales\, fairy tales and saints’ lives were told\, read and acted out. \nLeo van Zanen\, a regular guest-lecturer at Mayflower Bookshop\, opens the series on Sunday February 23 focusing on the question: ‘What did young people get to read in the Middle Ages?’   concentrating on the famous manuscript ‘Floris and Blancheflour)\, that was very popular in the Middle Ages. \nVan Zanen highlights this earliest form of children’s book and reads excerpts. \nSunday February 23\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Nice and Naughty – the rebellious children’s verse of Annie M.G. Schmidt \nAs second event in our series Children’s Classics\, we cannot omit  Dutch author Annie M.G. Schmidt and her rebellious children’s verses. \nDuring the ’50s Annie M.G. Schmidt (1911-1995) published eleven collections of verse for children\, altogether more than 300 titles. The poem ‘Ik ben lekker stout’ (translated by David Colmer as ‘Nice and naughty’) is representative of her view on the nature of children’s verse. ‘Start from the child’ was her motto. She wrote that modern children’s verse should be plain\, song like and simple\, funny and surprisingly nonsensical\, and that it must appeal in particular by its dance-like rhythm. Parental authority and morality are sometimes ridiculed in a playfully rebellious way. Schmidt was also inspired by 19th-century English authors like Edward Lear\, William Brighty Rands and Lewis Carroll. More than sixty of her poems for children have been translated into English\, but her language usage is as Dutch as possible. \nDr. Wim Tigges\, literary scholar and frequent lecturer at Mayflower Bookshop will show us In the sublime quality of her children’s verse. The lecture will be illustrated with many citations. Both lecture and citations will be in Dutch.

Yet\, as early as 1807 Charles and Mary Lamb as well as Thomas and Harriet Bowdler found it worth their while to prepare a number of plays for a youthful readership\, by retelling them or cleaning them up. Shakespeare’s child characters often don’t end well: they may die\, like the young princes in Richard III\, or disappear from sight and suffer for a long time\, like Marina in Pericles. However\, sometimes they play a funny role\, like the little grammar-school pupil William Page from The Merry Wives of Windsor — perhaps the youthful self-image of a certain William S. from Stratford Upon Avon…?

For instance\, the little bird is a flute and the grandfather is a bassoon. \nRussian composer Prokofiev wrote the piece on commission. It had an educational purpose. It was premiered in Moscow in 1936\, at a time when Russia was under the strict rule of Stalin\, who believed that art should support and propagate communist ideology. \nFamous narrators \nThere are several recordings of “Peter and the Wolf” with celebrities as narrators\, such as Sean Connery\, Bill Clinton and David Bowie. Well-known in the Netherlands are the versions with Paul de Leeuw and Ramses Shaffy. \nThis year’s Children’s Classics series has previously featured Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio\, A.A. DESCRIPTION:Coco Hoek on Sans Famille \nAs last lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s series on children’s classics\, Coco Hoek\, expert on French literature\, will treat us to a talk on the 19th century French classic ‘Sans famille’\,  a book that enthralled generations of Dutch children under the title Alleen op de wereld (in English: Nobody’s boy). Sans Famille was published in 1878 and adapted into film numerous times both in France and other countries. \nAs children\, we were thrilled by the adventures of the foundling Rémi\, the many disasters that befell him\, the colourful people he met. Not to mention that cleverest of monkeys\, Monsieur Joli-Coeur! But Hector Malot always wanted to do more than just entertain children – or adult readers. He wanted his little readers to learn something as well\, and he wanted his adult readers to think about the world they lived in. \nIn many ways he was  a man of his time\, living in a complicated and every-changing world. But in some ways\, that world wasn’t so very different from our own. And some of the things he cared about still matter today. \nWe’ll look at Hector Malot in his world\, and we’ll look at some themes that make him an interesting and thought-provoking writer even in our modern times. And of course\, we’ll renew our acquaintance with Rémi\, Mother Barberin\, Vitalis\, Mattia\, and of course the unforgettable Joli-Coeur!

DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 9\, Mayflower Bookshop welcomes translators Henk Akkermans and Wim Boot for an afternoon devoted to a fascinating form of Japanese poetry: the renga (連歌)\, or “linked verse.” The event (in Dutch) will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 PM at Mayflower Bookshop. \nTheir talk marks the publication of De renga-meester – Alle kettingverzen van Matsuo Bashō (Uitgeverij Noordboek\, 2025)\, which for the first time brings together all seventeen renga sequences composed under the guidance of the great poet Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694). \nIn the Japan of the Edo period (1600–1868)\, writing renga was a popular pastime among the educated classes. Each poem consisted of 36 alternating stanzas of three and two lines\, composed by several poets in turn. A “master” guided the sequence\, ensuring that each link connected subtly to the previous one: evoking association\, contrast\, and resonance rather than a straightforward narrative. \nAkkermans and Boot will offer an introduction to the genre\, to Bashō’s role as renga master\, and to the art of creating meaningful connections between verses. DESCRIPTION:Book launch and Live podcast recording – in English \nOn January 5\, Mayflower Bookshop will host a book launch and live podcast event for Inger Kuin’s Diogenes: The Rebellious Life and Revolutionary Philosophy of the Original Cynic (Basic Books\, 2025). The book is about the life and thought of Diogenes the Cynic\, an iconoclastic philosopher who pioneered a brash and free-thinking vision of life that inspired the philosophy of Stoicism. The author will be interviewed by podcaster and historian Timo Epping\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. \nIn his own day\, the ancient philosopher Diogenes the Cynic had a reputation for eccentricity\, heckling his fellow philosophers in the marketplace\, living in a clay pot\, and relieving himself in public. Since his death in 323 BCE\, devoted followers made him and his ideas famous the world over. But what we think we know about Diogenes remains distorted and sanitized. In Diogenes\, Inger Kuin scours all existing evidence of Diogenes and his followers to offer an in-depth account of Diogenes’ life and thought\, revealing a man whose innovative ideas about power\, death\, nature\, and the body have much to teach the contemporary world. He pioneered a vision of simplicity and autonomy in his day-to-day life\, stressing the importance of living in the here and now\, and of always thinking for oneself. Diogenes stands apart as history’s first recorded critic of slavery and a proud exile from polite society whose challenging thought proved foundational for the Stoics and their successors. \nDiogenes – “a rich\, engaging portrait of intellectual fearlessness” (Stacy Schiff\, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Cleopatra) – rehabilitates Diogenes as a compelling thinker for the twenty-first century\, one who demands that we look at our society with fresh eyes and be unafraid of change. \nInger Kuin is an associate professor of classics at the University of Virginia. Born in the Netherlands\, she worked as a journalist before receiving an MA in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam and a PhD in classics from New York University. She divides her time between Rotterdam\, the Netherlands\, and Charlottesville\, Virginia. \nTimo Epping is an educator at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden and the host and producer of several popular podcasts on history and music. The Diogenes book launch event will be recorded for his podcast Oudheid. \nStart time 20:00\, doors open 19:30. This event will be in English. Admission: free.
