SUMMARY:A Diogenes for Our Times – Oudheid Café: Special Edition
DESCRIPTION:Book launch and Live podcast recording – in English \nOn January 5\, Mayflower Bookshop will host a book launch and live podcast event for Inger Kuin’s Diogenes: The Rebellious Life and Revolutionary Philosophy of the Original Cynic (Basic Books\, 2025). The book is about the life and thought of Diogenes the Cynic\, an iconoclastic philosopher who pioneered a brash and free-thinking vision of life that inspired the philosophy of Stoicism. The author will be interviewed by podcaster and historian Timo Epping\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. \nIn his own day\, the ancient philosopher Diogenes the Cynic had a reputation for eccentricity\, heckling his fellow philosophers in the marketplace\, living in a clay pot\, and relieving himself in public. Since his death in 323 BCE\, devoted followers made him and his ideas famous the world over. But what we think we know about Diogenes remains distorted and sanitized. In Diogenes\, Inger Kuin scours all existing evidence of Diogenes and his followers to offer an in-depth account of Diogenes’ life and thought\, revealing a man whose innovative ideas about power\, death\, nature\, and the body have much to teach the contemporary world. He pioneered a vision of simplicity and autonomy in his day-to-day life\, stressing the importance of living in the here and now\, and of always thinking for oneself. Diogenes stands apart as history’s first recorded critic of slavery and a proud exile from polite society whose challenging thought proved foundational for the Stoics and their successors. \nDiogenes – “a rich\, engaging portrait of intellectual fearlessness” (Stacy Schiff\, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Cleopatra) – rehabilitates Diogenes as a compelling thinker for the twenty-first century\, one who demands that we look at our society with fresh eyes and be unafraid of change. \nInger Kuin is an associate professor of classics at the University of Virginia. Born in the Netherlands\, she worked as a journalist before receiving an MA in philosophy from the University of Amsterdam and a PhD in classics from New York University. She divides her time between Rotterdam\, the Netherlands\, and Charlottesville\, Virginia. \nTimo Epping is an educator at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden and the host and producer of several popular podcasts on history and music. The Diogenes book launch event will be recorded for his podcast Oudheid. \nStart time 20:00\, doors open 19:30. This event will be in English. Admission: free. Mayflower Bookshop\, Breestraat 70\, Leiden. If you would like to pre-order a copy of Diogenes please send an email to info@mayflowerbookshop.nl.

SUMMARY:De moorden in de boekenkast
DESCRIPTION:GREAT CRIME – 1: The murders in the bookcase: a review by Leo van Zanen \nThis year\, Mayflower Bookshop presents a literary lecture series on GREAT CRIME\, starting with a literature review by Leo van Zanen as an introduction to this series on Sunday February 22\, 2026. \nVan Zanen will give an overview of the major developments in classic crime literature. Krimi\, polar\, mystery\, detective\, whodunnit. Different words for similar stories in books or films: a crime has been committed\, usually a murder. Who did it? What exactly happened? Who discovers the true facts\, and how? \nDuring the nineteenth century\, a literary genre emerged in which solving obscure cases kept thousands of readers glued to the paper\, a century later to the screen. Sherlock Holmes\, Maigret\, Martin Beck\, De Cock – their names became commonplace. \nSo sharpen your wits and don’t miss this first lecture in our Great Crime series! \nAdmission: Free \nMayflower Bookshop\, Breestraat 70\, Leiden \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lawyers as Rebels or Collaborators: The Case of To Kill a Mockingbird
DESCRIPTION:GREAT CRIME – 2: Lawyers as Rebels or Collaborators: The Case of To Kill a Mockingbird \nThe second lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s Great Crime series will be given by Tony Foster of the Department of English at Leiden University. Please note that this lecture will be in English. His talk\, titled “Lawyers as Rebels or Collaborators: The Case of To Kill a Mockingbird\,” explores one of the most famous courtroom stories in modern literature. \nPublished in 1960\, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee quickly became a Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller and is still regarded as one of the great American novels of the twentieth century. The film adaptation\, released in 1962 and starring Gregory Peck\, won three Academy Awards and helped turn the novel’s central figure\, Atticus Finch\, into one of the most celebrated lawyers in fiction. \nMaycomb\, Alabama\, the summer of 1935. The small\, usually sleepy town is in an uproar. A young African-American man\, Tom Robinson\, stands accused of having assaulted and raped a young white woman\, Mayella Ewell. Enter his court-appointed lawyer\, Atticus Finch\, who has become one of the great heroes of legal fiction. A hero not only in the eyes of his daughter Scout\, from whose point of view we follow the trial and its effects on life in Maycomb. Generations of young Americans\, too\, have taken up law\, inspired by Atticus’s professional and personal ethics – his defence of Tom comes at a cost to his family and himself – and faith in the workings of the law. \nHowever\, there is also criticism. It is clear that Tom’s chances of a fair trial in the racist deep south of the 1930s are very slim indeed\, and this is largely due how American criminal procedure works. Circumstances Atticus can do very little to change\, no matter how hard he works. But we will also see that in some respects\, Atticus is ineffective and even incompetent\, being the lawyer and person that he is. And that in general\, lawyers may do more harm than good to the cause of justice by actually doing their job. \n  \nSunday March 29\, 2026: 16.00 \nAdmission: Free \nMayflower Bookshop\, Breestraat 70\, Leiden

SUMMARY:‘Hunted Down’: Charles Dickens en Thomas Wainewright
DESCRIPTION:CRIME #5: Wim Tigges on Crime & Dickens \nCharles Dickens was fascinated with crime\, and in particular with punishment. These are at least subsidiary themes in all of his novels and in many short stories\, where petty and great criminals occur in plenty\, from deceitful Mr. Jingle in The Pickwick Papers to the alleged murderer John Jasper in the uncompleted Mystery of Edwin Drood. Bleak House was one of the first novels in English to introduce a detective officer. In this lecture\, however\, the focus will be on Dickens’s acquaintance with Thomas Wainewright (1794-1847)\, who was suspected of murder and convicted for insurance fraud. Dickens met him on a visit to Newgate prison\, where Wainwright was awaiting transportation to Tasmania\, and he became an inspiration for one of his lesser-known short stories\, ‘Hunted Down’.
