SUMMARY:Mayflower Book Club reads The Safekeep
DESCRIPTION:Introducing the brand-new Mayflower Book Club! \nWe’re excited to announce the launch of the Mayflower Book Club! Starting on October 22\, we’ll meet on Wednesdays at 8 pm once a month to discuss the current book pick\, which will be available at a reduced price at Mayflower Bookshop. \nEach session\, participants get to vote for the next selection. Every book will be from a different country\, so we can explore diverse perspectives and learn from other cultures. As Leiden is home to many international students and expats\, and has a rich history of intercultural exchange\, we hope this book club will inspire new friendships\, insights\, and empathy across borders. Discussions will be held in English\, and all ages and nationalities are warmly welcome! \nParticipation is flexible: you can decide each month whether to join. This way\, the group will change from session to session\, bringing fresh perspectives every time. The chosen book will always be announced in our newsletter and on Instagram. \nOur very first Book of the Month is Dutch writer Yael van der Wouden’s debut novel The Safekeep. Set in the Netherlands of 1961\, the story follows Isa\, whose brother arrives with his girlfriend Eva. While Isa is initially put off by Eva\, their relationship evolves as a dark family secret unravels. The Safekeep has already won the Women’s Prize for Fiction and was nominated for the 2024 Booker Prize. \nIf you’d like to be part of the first session on Oktober 22\, simply send us an email at bookclub@mayflowerbookshop.nl with your name to sign up. To stay updated on future books and meetings\, subscribe to the Mayflower newsletter and/or follow us on Instagram @Mayflower_Bookclub. \nWe look forward to reading together!

SUMMARY:Sans Famille: Hector Malot\, a man of his time\, a man of our time
DESCRIPTION:Coco Hoek on Sans Famille \nAs last lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s series on children’s classics\, Coco Hoek\, expert on French literature\, will treat us to a talk on the 19th century French classic ‘Sans famille’\,  a book that enthralled generations of Dutch children under the title Alleen op de wereld (in English: Nobody’s boy). Sans Famille was published in 1878 and adapted into film numerous times both in France and other countries. \nAs children\, we were thrilled by the adventures of the foundling Rémi\, the many disasters that befell him\, the colourful people he met. Not to mention that cleverest of monkeys\, Monsieur Joli-Coeur! But Hector Malot always wanted to do more than just entertain children – or adult readers. He wanted his little readers to learn something as well\, and he wanted his adult readers to think about the world they lived in. \nIn many ways he was  a man of his time\, living in a complicated and every-changing world. But in some ways\, that world wasn’t so very different from our own. And some of the things he cared about still matter today. \nWe’ll look at Hector Malot in his world\, and we’ll look at some themes that make him an interesting and thought-provoking writer even in our modern times. And of course\, we’ll renew our acquaintance with Rémi\, Mother Barberin\, Vitalis\, Mattia\, and of course the unforgettable Joli-Coeur!
