On Sunday November 26, anglicist and scholar Ruud Hisgen concluded Mayflower Bookshop’s series ‘Great Books’ with a lecture on Miguel Cervantes’ all-time classic The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha. Aptly for the environment of an English Bookshop, Hisgen started his lecture by pointing out the similarities between Cervantes and his great English contemporary William Shakespeare, after which he took us on a journey through the masterpieces, showing us how fascinating the book still is in our day. The afternoon concluded by a performance of a dramatized chapter of the book by the Mayflower Theatre Company, with Esther Straathof as Dulcinea, Freek Bouricius as Sancho Panza and Roland de Ligny as Don Quixote.

The series was a great success, and we hope to come back to you with another international series in 2024!
