On the last Sunday in October, retired German teacher and translator of poetry Hans van der Veen gave the last lecture in Mayflower Bookshop’s series Great Loves on Theodor Fontane’s masterpiece Effi Briest.
In this seventh Great Loves lecture, Van der Veen gave us an insight into Fontane’s life and writings as well as into Effi Briest. With references to other great novels of this period such as Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina, Van der Veen nevertheless pointed out the uniqueness of Effi Briest.
A (renewed) acquaintance with this wonderful author and his work!
